The Significance of the SNAP!
After class I was asked about the significance of the snap! - which we saw in Riggs' film in the form of cartoons, everyday behavior, and choreographed performance (I think it was called the Snap! Institute?). As always, I would like to return the question to all of you before I weigh in - what do you think the significance of the snap! is?

I think the significance of the snap is similar to the boxing of the face/ linear plane of the voguing dance that we discussed at the end of Monday's class-- gay men are and were making their presence known, saying 'Don't erase me OR my experience.' It's a sudden, quick gesture to ground the opposite party in the reality of the encounter.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly enough, when I did a bit of research on the snap, I discovered SNAP! is also the name of a non-profit San Fransisco-based program for newcomers, funded by the city's department of health. It was created by gay and bi-sexual men for gay and bi-sexual men.
